Gastronomical Complex in a Historic Interest Site Study

A mixed group creating a single vision

Located in Antonina, a small historic seaside city 85km away from Curitiba, this group project in the solution proposed to a program of needs that requires the construction of a sizable annex besides a protected heritage site, the ‘Casarão Gomes’. Comprising of a restaurant and a school for culinary arts, the complex had to deal with specific heritage site legislation which targeted not only the building itself, but the entire nearby region of the historic city centre.

Along with other limitations regarding excavations and soil stability, the main concept is making an intervention that could be easily undone if needed, to restore the historic shell to a tabula rasa of sorts. Therefore it was decided on a modular steel structure able to support the free spans for the activities inside with a lower structural weight, and the use of prefab materials like sandwich panel walls to reduce waste, speed up construction and handle the technical needs of the project.

The group itself was of note, given that it was comprised of a French exchange student (responsible for the production of physical model used for studies), a Syrian refugee (responsible for the exterior renders and project compatibility) and me being the only member used to Brazilian standards and practices (responsible for the floor plans and compliance to all the norms and legislation from restaurants to accessibility).
